Well it was worse than I could have ever predicted. Probably worse than anybody could have predicted. Not only did the
Cedar River break previous flooding records, it crushed them. The Cedar was measured 12 feet higher than it had ever
been measured in the past and raised worldwide attention with devastating results. Words can't really describe, so
I have some images I've saved over the course of events.
Cedar Rapids neighborhoods starting to flood.
Downtown in Cedar Rapids becomes inundated.
This is the what the skies looked like most of the week of June 8th - June 14th in Eastern Iowa.
This was taken early on, days before the worst hit Cedar Rapids and Iowa City.
More flooding downtown.
Floodwaters reach unexpected, unprecedented levels.
Google Map of the 500-year flood plain. It reached much further than these estimates.
Over 400 city blocks submerged and more than 20,000 citizens displaced.
Interstate 380 was the only way across. Even Highway 30 was underwater.
This was the front page of The Gazette's web site for some time.
Words cannot describe.
Here are some more amazing photos. A co-worker sent me this link, Cedar Rapids,
Iowa Flood 2008, I hope it stays put for some time to come.
